HISTORY:
The program started in the year 2000 with Dr. Ruth Macklin from Albert Einstein College of Medicine (USA) as director and Dr. Florencia Luna as co-director. From that year onwards and without interruptions, the program has continued with a series of modifications with Dr. Macklin and Dr. Luna as co-directors. Since its beginning, it was thought as a North-South collaborative program to improve the conditions and training of Latin-American professionals on ethics in research. Today, there are approximately 50 persons trained by us in the region.
THE PROGRAM’S ACTIVITIES INCLUDE:
Carrying out the Master in Bioethics in-person and online and doing the training on ethics in research. The latter includes an in-person three-month period in Buenos Aires in which the trainee rotates through the different committees of ethics and attends various courses (some of them especially designed for the program). In the next months, the trainees return to their country of origin and resume their usual work in the institution to which they belong. At the same time, they perform the second stage of the Program: they develop an implementation work and complete the Master in Bioethics online 18 months later.
In the current program we have included a mentoring system done mainly in Buenos Aires and we have organized a network system with our former trainees with online tools so that they can continue with their training and progress. Besides, we have settled two collaborating centers to cooperate in the local development of bioethics and ethics in research and continue the contact with trainees of the nearby region.
